PURPOSE OF ROLE:

The Lead DevOps Engineer - Cloud is a senior individual contributor embedded within our Core Infrastructure team, serving as the critical link between our foundational cloud infrastructure and the application engineering teams who build and operate our e-commerce platform. While our Cloud Infrastructure Engineers are responsible for designing and managing the underlying AWS and GCP environments, the Cloud DevOps Engineer is responsible for making those environments accessible, usable, and productive for the broader engineering organization.

This role exists because world-class infrastructure alone is not sufficient — the tools, pipelines, and workflows that sit on top of that infrastructure determine whether engineering teams can move quickly and ship with confidence. In a retail environment where deployment frequency, release quality, and system availability directly affect customer experience and commercial performance, the Cloud DevOps Engineer plays a decisive role in our ability to compete and grow.

A distinguishing aspect of this role is hands-on ownership of our edge delivery and security layer. The Cloud DevOps Engineer will be responsible for integrating Fastly CDN and Signal Sciences (Fastly Next-Gen WAF) into our deployment pipelines and operational workflows, ensuring that edge configuration changes are version-controlled, tested, and deployed with the same rigor and repeatability as application code.

The Lead DevOps Engineer - Cloud, sits within the broader Infrastructure team alongside Cloud Infrastructure Engineers and reports into the same leadership structure, but operates with a distinct and complementary mandate. Where Infrastructure Engineers focus on provisioning, managing, and securing the cloud environment itself, the DevOps Engineer focuses on the delivery layer — the CI/CD pipelines, deployment frameworks, container orchestration workflows, edge configuration management, and observability tooling that application teams interact with daily.

The successful candidate will bring deep hands-on experience across CI/CD platforms, Kubernetes, edge delivery, and cloud-native tooling, combined with a genuine passion for developer experience, automation, and operational excellence.

YOUR IMPACT (Job Responsibilities):

• Consume and build upon the foundational infrastructure provisioned by the Infrastructure Engineering team, translating it into developer-facing platform capabilities
• Act as the primary point of contact for application engineering teams seeking guidance on deployment, release management, and pipeline architecture
• Serve as the operational owner of Fastly CDN and Signal Sciences configurations, working closely with Infrastructure Engineers and the Security team to ensure edge policies are aligned with infrastructure and security standards
• Collaborate closely with Infrastructure Engineers on shared concerns including secrets management, IAM permissions, network policies, and environment configuration
• Serve as an advocate for developer experience within infrastructure planning discussions, ensuring that new infrastructure capabilities are designed with usability and automation in mind
• Contribute to shared infrastructure initiatives including observability stack ownership, environment standardization, and platform reliability
• Design, build, and maintain CI/CD pipelines to support rapid, reliable, and auditable software delivery across our e-commerce platform, working in close coordination with Infrastructure Engineers who manage the underlying compute and network environments
• Manage and optimize containerized workload delivery using Kubernetes (EKS/GKE), collaborating with Infrastructure Engineers on cluster configuration, networking, and scaling policies
• Implement and maintain GitOps workflows using tools such as ArgoCD or Flux to ensure consistent, version-controlled deployment practices across environments
• Own the operational management of Fastly CDN, including service configuration, VCL development and maintenance, cache policy management, and the integration of Fastly configuration changes into CI/CD pipelines as code
• Administer and iterate on Signal Sciences / Fastly Next-Gen WAF rules, thresholds, and alerting policies, working in close collaboration with the Security team to ensure application traffic is protected against evolving threats without impacting legitimate customer traffic
• Develop and maintain automated testing and deployment workflows for Fastly and Signal Sciences configuration changes, ensuring that edge updates can be promoted across environments with the same safety and auditability as application deployments
• Build and maintain observability tooling including logging pipelines, metrics dashboards, and alerting frameworks using Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, or equivalent platforms, incorporating Fastly and Signal Sciences log streams as first-class data sources
• Partner with Infrastructure Engineers to integrate secrets management (HashiCorp Vault), IAM policies, and network security controls into CI/CD workflows and deployment pipelines
• Support capacity planning and edge readiness preparation ahead of peak retail events including seasonal promotions, flash sales, and new market launches
• Serve as a technical resource and enablement partner for application engineering teams, providing guidance on CI/CD best practices, containerization, edge delivery, and cloud-native deployment patterns

QUALIFICATIONS:

• 8+ years of experience in a DevOps, platform engineering, or site reliability engineering role, ideally within a high-traffic e-commerce or digital retail environment
• Hands-on experience with AWS and/or GCP, with a solid understanding of the services most relevant to application delivery including EKS, ECS, Lambda, API Gateway, CloudFront, and IAM
• Strong proficiency with CI/CD platforms such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, CircleCI, or Jenkins, including pipeline design, optimization, and governance
• Experience with Terraform or OpenTofu for infrastructure-as-code, with the ability to contribute to and consume shared infrastructure modules maintained by the Infrastructure Engineering team
• Solid working knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes including deployment management, resource configuration, RBAC, and networking

• Location: This individual must reside within commuting distance from our office.
• Work Schedule: This role follows a hybrid work schedule, requiring 4 days in-office per week
